Lagos Reinforces Its Role as Africa’s Economic Powerhouse at Harvard Forum

Lagos State continues to cement its position as Africa’s leading economic hub and a model for sustainable urban growth. This momentum was powerfully showcased when Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu addressed a distinguished global audience at the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum, hosted by the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, on March 4, 2026.

The forum, themed “Africa’s Urban Future: Cities at the Crossroads of Growth and Resilience,” brought together students, scholars, policymakers, and development experts, including John-Charuk Siafa, Mayor of Monrovia, Liberia to discuss the continent’s rapid urbanisation.

As Guest Speaker, co-sponsored by the Harvard University Center for African Studies and the Bloomberg Center for Cities, Governor Sanwo-Olu positioned Lagos at the heart of Africa’s urban transformation, sharing insights on strategic reforms, innovation, and inclusive development.

A Strong Economic Foundation Highlighted on the Global Stage

During the conversation, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos’ growing fiscal strength, noting that in 2024 the state generated $821.9 million (approximately ₦1.26 trillion) in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) representing about 35 percent of Nigeria’s total IGR.

This milestone reflects years of reforms in tax administration, improved transparency, and the expansion of the formal economy, enabling the state to fund major development projects with locally generated resources.

Building on this strong foundation, Lagos continues to attract significant investment. In the third quarter of 2025 alone, the state recorded $2.73 billion in capital inflows, accounting for about 45 percent of Nigeria’s total inflows during that period.

These figures underscore Lagos’ growing attractiveness to global investors and its pivotal role in driving economic activity across Nigeria and the African continent.

Guiding Growth Through the THEMES+ Agenda

Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that while Lagos is one of the world’s fastest-growing cities, the state government is deliberately guiding this expansion to ensure that growth translates into opportunity and improved quality of life for residents.

Central to this vision is the THEMES+ development agenda, which prioritises investments in transportation, technology, tourism, entertainment, security, education, health, and social inclusion.

Among the most visible outcomes of this strategy are the Blue Line and Red Line rail systems, which are transforming urban mobility in a megacity of more than 20 million people.

At the same time, Lagos continues to strengthen its position as a leading innovation hub. The state is now home to over 2,000 startups and is widely recognised as one of Africa’s fastest-growing technology ecosystems, powered by a vibrant youth population,

40 percent of whom are between the ages of 15 and 34.

Lagos and the Diaspora: Partners in Progress

For Lagosians across the diaspora, these developments present exciting opportunities for deeper engagement.

As Lagos attracts global attention, investment, and partnerships, the diaspora community remains a vital partner, contributing through remittances, knowledge transfer, professional networks, and direct investments in sectors such as technology, infrastructure, real estate, tourism, and the creative economy.

The Harvard forum served as an important platform to highlight these opportunities, presenting Lagos not only as a destination for investment but also as a collaborative hub where diaspora expertise and capital can help shape sustainable urban development.

Through initiatives led by the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs (LASDA), Lagosians abroad are increasingly connected to opportunities at home, from skill-sharing programmes to diaspora investment facilitation.

Looking Forward: Defining Africa’s Urban Story

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s engagement at this prestigious global forum reinforces a clear message: Lagos is not merely growing, it is helping define the future of African cities.

As Africa urbanises faster than any other region in the world, Lagos stands as a powerful example of what is possible when strategic leadership, innovation, and inclusive policies work together.

For the diaspora community, this moment presents an invitation to participate, invest, collaborate, and contribute to building a more prosperous, connected, and resilient Lagos.
