In continuation of his administration’s commitment to positioning Lagos as a globally competitive hub for innovation and opportunity, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu today received the Consul General of Denmark, Ms. Jette Bjerrum, and Denmark’s Tech Ambassador, Mrs. Anne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard, on a courtesy visit at Lagos House, Ikeja.

The high-level engagement focused on strengthening bilateral collaboration between Lagos State and Denmark, with particular emphasis on the technology sector, a critical driver of the State’s economic transformation agenda. Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated that Lagos remains open to meaningful partnerships that create real opportunities for youth, entrepreneurs, and businesses.

Lagos as Africa’s Innovation Frontier

Under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, Lagos has emerged as one of Africa’s most dynamic economic and technological hubs. With a population exceeding 20 million, a thriving startup ecosystem, and a strong commitment to digital transformation, the State continues to leverage technology to address urban challenges and drive inclusive growth.

This vision is anchored in the THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritises Technology, Education, and Economic Development as key pillars of governance. The engagement with the Danish delegation aligns with this vision, opening new pathways for knowledge exchange, innovation partnerships, and sustainable development.

Strategic Partnership with Denmark

Denmark is globally recognised for its leadership in digital governance, green technology, and smart city solutions. The presence of a dedicated Tech Ambassador reflects the country’s forward-thinking approach to technology diplomacy.

Key areas of mutual interest discussed include:

  • Knowledge Transfer and Capacity Building: Leveraging Danish expertise in digital systems and governance frameworks.

  • Innovation Ecosystems: Fostering collaboration between Lagos-based startups and Danish tech companies.

  • Green and Sustainable Technology: Integrating climate-smart solutions into urban planning and infrastructure.

  • Digital Skills Development: Equipping Lagos youth with globally competitive capabilities through targeted programmes.

These focus areas complement existing bilateral frameworks, including ongoing Nigeria–Denmark cooperation on digital transformation and broader Nordic innovation engagements.

Infrastructure as a Foundation for Growth

This growing tech diplomacy is underpinned by significant infrastructure investments across Lagos. The Lagos Rail Mass Transit system, particularly the Blue Line and Red Line has begun transforming urban mobility, reducing travel time, and improving productivity across the State.

The proposed Green Line, connecting key economic zones such as the Lekki Free Trade Zone, further reinforces Lagos’ long-term vision of becoming a fully connected, investment-ready megacity.

Together, these developments provide the physical backbone required to support digital innovation, attract foreign investment, and enable seamless diaspora participation in Lagos’ growth story.

The Diaspora as a Strategic Bridge

For the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs (LASDA), this engagement holds significant importance. Nigerians in Denmark and across the Nordic region represent a valuable network of professionals with expertise in technology, innovation, finance, and sustainability.

Through this partnership, LASDA will continue to:

  • Facilitate collaboration between diaspora tech professionals and local innovation ecosystems

  • Encourage diaspora investment in Lagos’ digital and infrastructure sectors

  • Promote mentorship, exchange programmes, and joint ventures

  • Create structured platforms for knowledge and skills transfer

The State Government has also introduced enabling initiatives including diaspora-focused investment platforms to ensure that Lagosians abroad can actively contribute to the State’s development.

Creating Real Opportunities for Youth and Businesses

At the core of this engagement is a commitment to delivering tangible outcomes.

This collaboration is expected to unlock:

  • Expanded youth employment through digital skills training and tech-enabled jobs

  • Growth opportunities for SMEs via access to global markets and digital tools

  • Innovation-driven solutions tailored to Lagos’ unique urban challenges

By combining Denmark’s technological expertise with Lagos’ scale, entrepreneurial energy, and youthful population, the partnership holds strong potential to create opportunities across fintech, agritech, healthtech, cleantech, and smart governance.

The Road Ahead: A Greater, Global Lagos

The Lagos–Denmark engagement goes beyond a diplomatic visit, it represents a strategic step toward positioning Lagos as a leading global city for innovation, investment, and inclusive prosperity.

Lagos is open. Lagos is ready. Lagos is rising.

The Lagos State Government, through LASDA, invites Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those in Denmark and across the Nordic region to take advantage of these emerging opportunities. Whether through investment, expertise, mentorship, or partnerships, your contribution remains vital to building the Lagos of our collective vision.
