Monuments in Lagos: Agiya Tree Monument

Writer: Lagos DiasporaLagos Diaspora

The Agiya Tree Monument is set in the centre of Obada market. It is notable for being the location where Thomas Birch Freeman and Henry Townsend first preached Christianity in Nigeria on September 24, 1842.

On June 20, 1959, the tree was felled and replaced with a cenotaph after it had endured for over 300 years. It is a key part in the Nigerian Christian History, and it is located close to the Badagry Town Hall.
