Over 10,000 testing kits, free counselling, and preventive services rolled out across Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria — In furtherance of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to preventive healthcare and public wellbeing under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs has launched a comprehensive HIV prevention, testing, and sensitisation initiative tagged “Detty December, Safe December,” with technical and programmatic support from the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA).
The campaign aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, which places strong emphasis on healthcare access, preventive interventions, and inclusive public health strategies, particularly during high-impact periods such as the festive season.
The initiative targets the festive period, ensuring that Lagosians in the diaspora, returning residents, and visitors can celebrate responsibly while protecting their health.
Key features of the campaign include:
Over 10,000 HIV testing kits distributed across strategic locations
Male and female condoms and lubricants freely available
Free and confidential counselling and support services
Presence at Diaspora Detty December talks, group engagements, forums, and social events
Speaking on the initiative, ESV. Jermaine Sanwo-Olu, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs, noted that the campaign reflects the Governor’s people-centred approach to governance.
“Under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State continues to prioritise health as a shared responsibility. As Detty December draws thousands of Lagosians in the diaspora and visitors home, this initiative ensures that celebration goes hand in hand with safety, awareness, and access to care,” he said.
The campaign will deliver free and confidential HIV testing, counselling, and support services, alongside the distribution of over 10,000 HIV testing kits, male and female condoms, and lubricants at Diaspora Detty December talks, forums, group engagements, and major social events across Lagos.
Providing technical support for the campaign, Dr. Folake Animashaun, CEO of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, reaffirmed the agency’s role in advancing the Governor’s health vision.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has consistently demonstrated strong political will in strengthening preventive healthcare in Lagos State. By supporting this diaspora-led initiative, LSACA is ensuring that accurate information, quality testing, and professional counselling are available to residents and visitors during this critical period,” she stated.
The initiative will be driven by an integrated media, community engagement, and public sensitisation campaign, leveraging diaspora networks, digital platforms, and on-ground outreach.
Diaspora-based health professionals are encouraged to volunteer and contribute their expertise to support the campaign’s outreach and counselling components.
