We Remain Committed To A Safe, Secure Lagos - Commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins has reiterated the present administration’s determination to ensure a safe, secure and prosperous Lagos.

The Commissioner made the assertion during the 2020 Ministerial Press briefing commemorating Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s First Year Anniversary at the JJK Park Alausa Ikeja, on Wednesday.

According to Bamgbose-Martins, the prompt response of the Emergency Response team of the government has saved a lot of lives and property during the 154 Fire outbreaks and about 240 road accidents that occurred in Lagos in the past one year.

The Commissioner explained that the Ministry, through its various Emergency Response Agencies like the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lagos State Fire Services, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the Lagos State Neighborhood Service, has done so much to mitigate the loss of lives and property.

On the Pipeline explosion at Abule-Ado earlier this year, he informed that in line with Government’s desire to tackle disasters immediately they occur, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the scene and promptly set up a relief trust fund with ₦250 million to support and cushion loss for all affected families.

Bamgbose-Martins also disclosed that the government has directed the Lagos State Safety Commission to carry out safety advocacy in all nooks and crannies of the State in line with its mandate on ensuring safety in every sector and industry.

Revealing that the Commission is collaborating with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, to enforce compliance with the stipulated directives on COVID-19, Bamgbose-Martins said the exercise includes ensuring adherence to the zero-congregational order by religious organisations, physical distancing, regular hand washing, use of Sanitisers and face masks by all residents among others.

He added that the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps, saddled with the responsibility of attending to crimes at the community level, has in the past one year, resolved issues pertaining to murder, robbery, drug abuse, kidnapping, terrorism, and vandalism.

The Commissioner also called on Lagosians to be security conscious, stressing that most accidents and fire incidents were preventable and avoidable if only people were more cautious and careful.
