Elevating Cultural Heritage on the Global Stage

In Lagos, culture is more than tradition - it is a strategic driver of diplomacy, innovation, and economic growth. Under the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state is redefining heritage as a cornerstone of international engagement. Indigenous fashion, particularly the iconic Adire textile, has become a powerful symbol of this cultural renaissance, reflecting identity while opening new avenues for global influence and opportunity.

This vision came into focus recently when Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, hosted a high-level meeting with Her Majesty Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, founder of Africa Fashion Week London and Nigeria, and British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Jonny Baxter.

Their discussion centered on Adire, the hand-dyed Yoruba fabric celebrated for its artistry and heritage. The engagement aimed to expand Adire’s global visibility, particularly in the lead-up to the 15th edition of Africa Fashion Week London, a major platform for African fashion on the international stage.

“Lagos continues to lead as the fashion and creative capital of Nigeria,” said Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka. “By supporting platforms that promote our cultural identity, we are investing in both the past and the future- empowering artisans and inspiring the next generation.”

The Commissioner described the meeting as a strategic step in positioning Lagos as a global hub for indigenous fashion and creative enterprise. The focus was not just on fashion, but on preserving the stories, traditions, and craftsmanship that make Adire a living heritage.

This initiative reflects a core belief championed by Governor Sanwo-Olu: that cultural diplomacy is as vital as economic diplomacy. Beyond roads and rails, it is the soul of a city, its stories, colors, and traditions that creates lasting global resonance.

The Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs reinforces this vision by recognizing the diaspora's crucial role in promoting African culture abroad. From New York to London, Lagosians and Nigerians in the diaspora proudly serve as cultural ambassadors, carrying our fashion, music, and heritage into global spaces. This synergy of local creativity and global engagement is deepening identity while strengthening international ties.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration continues to invest not just in infrastructure, but in cultural soft power - turning Lagos’ heritage into an engine for diplomacy and economic growth. Initiatives like this show that Lagos is not just building a modern city, it’s shaping a cultural legacy.

As Adire moves from local markets to international runways, it tells the story of a people vibrant, resilient, and forward-looking. And in doing so, it reminds the world that Africa’s heritage is not only to be preserved, but to be celebrated and elevated.
