The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board has commended Guidance Counsellors across Public Primary Schools in the Lagos at its Y2020 Guidance and Counsellors end of year party. The Executive Chairman, LASUBEB, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King, in his remarks appreciated the counsellors for their contributions to the Education Sector, most especially during the pandemic-induced lockdown, when they had to sacrifice their comfort to check on the pupils at their various homes. He stated that the advocacy and sensitisation programmes organised by the counsellors during the pandemic helped reduce the spread of COVID-19 among pupils, just as it mitigated cases of gender violence, child molestation and other related social vices during the lockdown.

Alawiye-King urged the counsellors to remain focused while exhibiting professionalism with a sense of responsibility and commitment to their duties, saying "One thing that is unique about your calling is that you are professionals, and as professionals, you are expected to behave in a certain manner because you are guided by rules and regulations". In her address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Abosede Adelaja, applauded the counsellors for their relentless efforts at making the pupils stay safe and sane, as well as assisting them to excel in their education. She explained that the annual event is designed to celebrate counsellors for working meritoriously and also to encourage them to continually put in their best in the delivery of their duties and responsibilities.

While imploring them to always exude a positive attitude in the discharge of their assigned tasks for the sake of the innocent children, the Permanent Secretary noted that a behaviour worthy of emulation will encourage the students to improve their performance in school. The high point of the event was the presentation of awards to deserving counsellors in recognition of their selfless service, and going beyond the call of duty. Source-lagosstate.gov.ng
