Writer: Lagos DiasporaLagos Diaspora

The Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment has disclosed that over 2,200 unemployed youths have so far benefited from its Mindset Re-Orientation Virtual Workshop since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, assuring that the participants now stand a better chance of securing lucrative employment opportunities. Speaking during the second edition of the virtual training session held recently, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke said that the Ministry was using the training exercise to reduce the rate of unemployment in the State. While acknowledging that the training programme was specifically targeted at the unemployed youth population, the Commissioner maintained that gainfully engaged persons can also benefit from the workshop to acquire more knowledge and improve themselves. She expressed confidence in the capacity of the facilitators, saying that they are knowledgeable and experienced in giving out very useful business tips and information needed to cope in both formal and informal work environment. Arobieke noted that the State government observed the surge in unemployment rates, especially during this pandemic period, and decided to develop wealth and job creation strategies to help bridge the gap created by the situation. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Boladele Dapo-Thomas, disabused the minds of the unemployed youth from desiring white collar jobs at all cost, advising that there are other ways of being successful in life apart from securing white-collar jobs. She emphasised the need for job seekers to be engaged and not despise little beginnings so that it will be easier for them to recognise opportunities and make good use of them. One of the facilitators at the training, Roseline Onalaja spoke on the importance of volunteerism and called on job seekers to consider volunteering as a way of engaging themselves pending when windows of opportunity open, warning that being idle is dangerous.
