Writer: Lagos DiasporaLagos Diaspora

The six Education Districts in Lagos State and the United Nations Information Centre, UNIC, have concluded plans to host the 2nd Lagos Secondary Schools Model United Nations (LASSMUN) Conference on Zoom. The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Education District III, Dr. Yinka Ayandele, who made this disclosure over the weekend, commended the partnership of UNIC with the State's education sector over the years, saying that the Centre had been instrumental to some innovations across Lagos Public schools. According to her, the theme of the Conference "Ensuring Quality Education Through Technology and Innovation”, is in line with the 3rd pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda, which is Education and Technology, and would expose participants to new ideas and appropriate use of technology to support learning. She expressed hope that with the theme of the conference, the students from the participating schools would be better equipped with speaking and communication skills that would give them an edge over their contemporaries. The TG/PS explained that UNIC decided to expand the Conference to accommodate all students from government public schools across the State for wider effect of the innovations, revealing that the maiden edition of the Conference was hosted by Education District III and was then limited to students from the District. She affirmed that the Conference had a positive impact on the performance of students from Education District III at different competitions within the District, across the State and beyond. The overall intention of modelling the UN Assembly, according to Dr. Ayandele, is to produce competent, bold and assertive leaders of tomorrow who can compete and collaborate favourably with their counterparts globally without intimidation. Ayandele recalled that the students attending public secondary schools in Lagos State had their first experience of how the United Nations General Assembly works during the Secondary Schools Model United Nations (LASSMUN) held at the Lagos Business School (LBS), Lagos in December, 2019. The 2019 Conference was themed “Making Cities Inclusive, Safe, Resilient and Sustainable (Goal 11 SDG)”, and was geared at providing pupils drawn from public secondary schools with the opportunity to engage and learn about diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations (UN). The annual Conference could not hold in 2020 due to the outbreak of the global Coronavirus pandemic.
