What Lagosians Need to Know About the New U.S. Visa Bond Policy

The United States Government has expanded a visa bond requirement that may affect Nigerian citizens, including Lagosians, applying for B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourism) visas. Under this policy, applicants from selected countries including Nigeria may be required to post a refundable visa bond of up to $15,000 as part of the visa application process. The policy is scheduled to take effect for Nigerians from January 21, 2026.

Understanding the Visa Bond

A visa bond is a financial guarantee required by the U.S. Government to ensure that a visa holder complies with the terms of their stay, particularly by departing the United States before the authorised period expires. The bond amount: $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 is determined by a U.S. consular officer during the visa interview based on individual risk assessment.

It is important to note that the visa bond is not a visa fee. Where required, it is refundable if the applicant complies fully with visa conditions or if the visa is ultimately not used. However, payment of the bond does not guarantee visa approval, as all applicants must still meet standard U.S. visa eligibility requirements.

What This Means for Nigerians

For many Lagosians intending to travel to the United States for tourism, business meetings, family visits, or medical reasons, this policy introduces a significant upfront financial obligation in addition to existing visa fees and travel costs. At the highest level, the bond requirement may pose challenges for small business owners, leisure travellers, and other applicants without substantial disposable income.

Nigeria’s inclusion reflects broader U.S. efforts to reduce visa overstays and strengthen immigration compliance. While the policy is not a travel ban, it underscores the need for strong documentation and credible travel intent.

Steps Lagosians Should Take to Stay in Alignment

Prospective travellers are advised to take the following steps:

  • Plan early by beginning the visa process well ahead of intended travel dates.

  • Demonstrate strong ties to Nigeria, including employment, business ownership, family responsibilities, or property.

  • Maintain accurate travel and financial records and strictly comply with visa terms to ensure bond refund eligibility.

  • Follow official guidance on approved payment procedures and designated ports of entry and exit, as specified by U.S. authorities.

  • Seek professional advice from reputable immigration consultants or legal practitioners and rely on official U.S. government sources for updates.

Key Takeaway

The expanded U.S. visa bond policy represents a stricter compliance measure that Lagosians should take seriously. While it may increase the cost and complexity of travel planning, early preparation, transparency, and adherence to visa conditions remain the most effective ways to safeguard travel opportunities and ensure successful outcomes.
