Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos is a 14.5-hectare ceremonial ground.
"RACE COURSE" was the initial name. The entrance to the square is guarded by colossal statues of four white horses hovering above the gate and seven red eagles, both of
which are national emblem symbols representing Strength and Dignity.
It was first given to colonial authorities before it was renovated to become the Tafawa Balewa Square it is today. The square contains other monuments including the Remembrance Arcade (with memorials to World War I, World
War Il and Nigerian civil war victims) and the 26-storey Independence House, built in 1963 which was for a long time, the tallest building in Nigeria.
