Lagos Makes Waves: First African City to Host E1 Electric Powerboat Championship

In a bold stride cementing its global influence and innovative spirit, Lagos State has been announced as the first African city to host a race in the prestigious UIM E1 World Championship—the world’s premier electric powerboat racing series, organized by the PIF (E1) series. This groundbreaking event is scheduled to energize the Lagos waterways on October 4th and 5th, 2025.

For Nigerians in the diaspora, this is more than a sporting event—it’s a powerful statement. Lagos is stepping onto the world stage not only as Africa’s economic powerhouse, but as a future-forward city committed to clean energy, sustainable innovation, and global relevance.

A Global First for Africa, A Giant Leap for Lagos.

This will be the first time the E1 Championship touches African waters, and Lagos was strategically selected for its vibrant coastline, innovation-ready ecosystem, and its growing reputation as a hub for technology and culture. As home to Africa’s most dynamic cityscape and an ever-expanding Blue Economy, Lagos offers an ideal arena for this clean-tech sporting spectacle.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu celebrated the announcement, calling it a defining moment in Lagos’s evolution:

"Lagos State embodies the spirit of energy, enterprise, and relentless progress. We are immensely proud to partner with the E1 World Championship to bring this groundbreaking event to our shores."

For diasporans, the Governor’s message rings especially true. It’s a reminder of the resilient, visionary spirit that continues to drive progress back home—an invitation to reconnect and reinvest in the Lagos story.

This isn’t just about electric boats and speed—it’s about shaping the future. The race is part of a wider sustainability mission to promote eco-conscious innovation and inspire the next generation of green leaders in Nigeria.

E1 CEO Rodi Basso, speaking with Forbes, echoed the significance of Lagos’s involvement:

"Lagos is a city brimming with potential, a place where innovation thrives and where there is a palpable drive for progress."

As diasporans, this is our opportunity to witness Lagos push boundaries and lead Africa into the new frontier of sustainable technology. It’s an open invitation to be part of a transformational legacy.

Lagos State is working closely with the E1 organization to deliver an unforgettable and impactful event. Plans are already underway to integrate local communities, boost economic activity, and forge long-term partnerships that will outlast the race weekend.

For those abroad, whether you're in tech, tourism, business, or simply passionate about Nigeria’s future this is a chance to engage. Whether it’s traveling home for the event, supporting from abroad, or exploring opportunities in Lagos’s green innovation space, this moment is one to be part of.

As Lagos prepares to welcome the world in October 2025, this milestone reflects not just the state's ambitions, but also the potential of every Nigerian—at home and abroad—to contribute to a cleaner, smarter, and more globally influential Africa.
