Lagos Diaspora Destination - Vlekete Slave Market

The Vlekete Slave Market is a market in Lagos State's Badagry. The market, which was founded in 1502 and named after the Vlekete deity -"the goddess of ocean and wind" who was worshipped by the people.

The market played an important role during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in Badagry. One of the prominent figures tried here was Richard

Lander, a British emperor in 1825. The market was a major trading post where African middlemen sold captives to European slave traders, making it one of West Africa's most numerous slave markets.

Vlekete Market is now a tourist centre and an evening centre, and it is located on

Market Road, Badagry.
